A mannequin with a lit plexi-glass head appeared on the catwalk, rising up from underneath the runway on a platform to present a daywear look at McQueen’s Fall 1999 show in Paris for Givenchy haute couture. With its caramel tones and floral brocade top teamed with Mary Jane shoes, the look channels the 1940s.

“The staging of Givenchy’s Spring [2007] couture - a heavy mist, water dripping onto a gray slab, an indistinct view of a raised tableau in the background - was enigmatic, until you knew the backstory.
